The Ring Experience

The Ring Experience is a hands-on workshop where you have the opportunity to craft your own ring. This workshop is perfect for couples who want to infuse their wedding or commitment rings with the shared experience of creating them together or for someone who would like to create their own personal heirloom.

The Ring Experience starts with a consultation with me, Christine Heidel. I am the owner and maker behind the jewelry line Silver + Salt.  During the consultation, we will talk about your ideas for your ring, decide on the best fabrication method, select materials and source any gemstones you would like to include in your design.

Once the plan is set, we will schedule a workshop. Workshops typically last 4-6 hours, depending on the design of the ring, and you will usually be able to take your ring home at the end of the workshop.

During the workshop, I will be with you each step of the way to help you realize your design.

There are two options on how to make your rings:

With fabricated rings, we will start with metal wire or sheet. From there, you will cut, form, solder and finish your ring and I can set any stones.

Casting starts with a wax carving session where you will carve your design in hard wax. Depending on your design and your desired outcome, we can then go on to cast your rings in my studio using a sand casting technique or send them out for lost wax casting

In sand casting, we will pack your wax model into a special type of sand to create a mold. Molten metal is poured into the sand mold forming your ring. From there, we will sand and polish the ring and set any stones.

Lost wax casting is done at a local casting shop. First, the wax rings that you carved are are placed in in a metal flask. Plaster is then poured into the flask. Once the plaster hardens, the flask is placed in a kiln where the wax burns away, creating a plaster mold of your ring design. Molten metal is then poured into the mold. Once the rings are returned to me from the caster, I will complete the ring by sanding and polishing and setting any stones.

Whether your rings are fabricated or cast, the end result will be a one-of-a-kind, handmade treasure that will carry with it the unique memories of your ring making experience and the love that you put into it.

The price of your rings starts with the workshop fee of $450. The rest of the cost depends on your ring design, metal choice, fabrication method and whether your rings include gemstones. The typical cost for a pair of rings is between $750 - $1,200 including the workshop fee, metal and most gemstones. Because there are so many different factors that contribute to the cost of your rings, we can discuss a more specific price estimate during your consultation so that you can ensure that your design fits within your budget.
